Universidad Simón Bolivar

About

Universidad Simón Bolívar (USB) is a prestigious public university in Venezuela, highly regarded for its excellence in engineering, sciences, and technology. It is particularly known for its rigorous programs in fields such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Architecture, consistently ranking among the top institutions in the country. For international students, the primary language of instruction is Spanish, and while USB fosters an inclusive environment, dedicated English-taught programs or extensive international student support services are not a primary focus. Prospective international students should possess strong Spanish proficiency and be prepared for an immersive experience within the local academic and cultural context. Its distinctive campus, designed by Jesús Tenreiro-Degwitz, is celebrated for its modern architecture harmoniously integrated into the natural mountainous landscape of Sartenejas.

Background

Simón Bolívar University (Spanish: Universidad Simón Bolívar, USB) is a public university in Venezuela with a focus on science, technology, and engineering. Founded by presidential decree in 1967 and inaugurated in 1970, it operates two campuses: the main campus in the Sartenejas valley of Baruta municipality, Miranda state (south of Caracas), and a second campus in Camurí Grande, Vargas state, on the Caribbean coast. The university offers undergraduate and graduate programmes across engineering, the sciences, architecture, urban planning, and the humanities. The institution was named after independence hero Simón Bolívar and carries the motto "The University of the Future" (La Universidad del Futuro). Since the 2010s, USB has been severely affected by Venezuela's economic and political crisis, with significant faculty departures, deteriorating infrastructure, and disputes over university autonomy.
