Universidade Pedagógica

About

Universidade Pedagógica (UP) is Mozambique's premier public institution dedicated to teacher training and educational sciences, playing a pivotal role in shaping the nation's educational landscape. It is best known for its comprehensive programs in pedagogy, educational management, and various subject-specific teaching degrees, consistently producing a significant portion of Mozambique's educators. While the primary language of instruction is Portuguese, UP welcomes international students, often facilitating their integration through general student support services and participation in Lusophone academic exchange networks. The university's distinctive characteristic lies in its unparalleled focus and scale as the largest institution solely dedicated to preparing teachers across all levels of education in Mozambique. International students can expect to immerse themselves in a Portuguese-speaking academic environment with opportunities for cultural exchange.

Background

The Maputo University (Portuguese: Universidade Maputo) is one of Mozambique's principal universities. The name of the university is abbreviated to UniMaputo or UM. As a university, it was the first and the only public fully dedicated to teacher education in the country. According to the institution's founding decree, its name is Maputo University, but it is commonly referred to as Maputo Pedagogical University. UniMaputo has its headquarters and main campus in Maputo and, until 2019, had delegations in all provinces of the country, when it was affected by an extensive administrative reform that limited its competence to the national capital. There are over 16,000 students attending the UniMaputo system.
