The Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, now known as the Central University of Tibetan Studies (CUTS), is a unique public institution in Sarnath, India, dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Tibetan culture, language, and Buddhist philosophy. It is best known for its deep academic focus on Buddhist Philosophy, Tibetan Language and Literature, and Tibetan History, offering a rare opportunity for immersive study in these fields. International students are drawn to CUTS for its specialized curriculum and the authentic environment for studying Tibetan traditions, often engaging directly with scholars and practitioners. While not having a dedicated 'international school' in the conventional sense, the university's global appeal means English is frequently used in academic discourse, and students are well-integrated into its distinct academic community. Its most distinctive characteristic is being the only university established by a national government (India) specifically for Tibetan studies, in consultation with the Dalai Lama.
The Central University for Tibetan Studies (CUTS), formerly called the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS; Tibetan: ཝ་ཎ་མཐོ་སློབ, Wylie: wa Na mtho slob), is a Deemed University founded in Sarnath, Varanasi, India, in 1967. It is an autonomous university under India's Ministry of Culture. The CUTS was founded by Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso with the aims of educating exiled Tibetan youths and other Himalayan border students, and re-translating original Indo-Buddhist Sanskrit texts, that in 1959 existed only in Tibetan, into Sanskrit, Hindi, and other modern Indian languages.
