Established in 1889 in Oregon's Willamette Valley, Mount Angel Seminary is the oldest and largest Catholic seminary in the Western United States, best known for its rigorous academic programs in philosophy, theology, and divinity. It was established 144 years ago in 1882 from Engelberg Abbey, in Switzerland. The abbey, located on the top of Mount Angel, a 485-foot-high butte (148 m), has its own post office separate from the city of Mt. Angel. As of 2021, the abbey is home to approximately 51 monks.
