Université de Buéa

About

The University of Buea, established in 1993, stands as Cameroon's pioneering Anglophone university, offering a unique English-medium education within a bilingual country. It is particularly renowned for its robust programs in Health Sciences, Science, and Social and Management Sciences, alongside strong faculties in Education and Agriculture. For international students, the university provides a supportive environment, facilitated by its primary English language of instruction and an International Relations Office that assists with integration and academic guidance. While dedicated international summer schools are not a primary feature, its Anglophone identity naturally attracts a diverse international student body seeking quality education in Central Africa. Its distinctive characteristic is its status as the first university in Cameroon to operate predominantly in English, making it a key hub for Anglophone scholarship in the region.

Background

University of Buea (UB) is found in Molyko, Buea, in the southwest region of Cameroon. It was founded as a university centre in 1985 and became a full-fledged university in 1992, following a government decree that re-organized state universities in the country. It is regarded as the best university in Cameroon and is one of two English speaking universities in Cameroon, alongside the University of Bamenda, which follow the British system of education. It serves citizens from both anglophone and francophone regions of Cameroon and from neighboring countries such as Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.
