About

Universidad Nacional de Jujuy (UNJu) is a public institution known for its strong regional focus, particularly in fields related to natural resources, sustainable development, and the humanities. Its strongest programs often include engineering (especially mining and industrial), agricultural sciences, and social sciences, reflecting the unique characteristics and needs of the Jujuy province. For international students, UNJu offers support through its Secretaría de Relaciones Internacionales, which assists with exchange programs, academic integration, and cultural activities, though most instruction is in Spanish. While dedicated English-taught programs are limited, the university actively participates in regional mobility initiatives, fostering a diverse learning environment. A distinctive characteristic is its deep engagement with the socio-economic and environmental challenges and opportunities of the Andean region, making it ideal for those interested in local development and cultural studies.

Background

The National University of Jujuy (Spanish: Universidad Nacional de Jujuy, UNJU) is an Argentine national university, situated in the city of San Salvador de Jujuy, capital of Jujuy Province. Its precursor, the Instituto Superior de Ciencias Económicas (Economic Sciences Institute), was established by Governor Horacio Guzmán in 1959. Redesignated the Provincial University of Jujuy in 1972, a program of decentralization of the country's national university system, as outlined by presidential adviser Dr. Alberto Taquini, resulted in the school's formal establishment as such on November 11, 1973. The university maintains sixteen schools and five institutes, the latter of which are specialized in mining, geology, and zoology. It also operates an FM radio station, UNJu, and a publisher, EdiUNJu.
