Oita Medical University, established in 1976, was a national institution renowned for its comprehensive medical education and research. While it merged with Oita University in 2003, its legacy continues as the Faculty of Medicine at Oita University, which remains a key regional hub for medical sciences. Prospective international students interested in medicine or nursing would now apply to Oita University, where programs are primarily conducted in Japanese, though some graduate-level research opportunities may involve English. The university's International Affairs Center provides support for international students, helping them navigate academic and daily life. Its distinctive characteristic was its dedicated focus on training medical professionals to serve the Oita prefecture and beyond.
