The Islamic University of Rotterdam (IUR) is a unique institution in the Netherlands, primarily known for its academic excellence in Islamic theology and sciences, including the training of imams and spiritual caregivers. Its strongest programs typically include Islamic Theology and Islamic Spiritual Care, offering a deep dive into classical and contemporary Islamic thought. While the primary language of instruction for its core degree programs is Dutch, with significant use of Arabic for religious texts, the university welcomes international students interested in its specialized curriculum. Support for international students might be more individualized given its niche focus, rather than through extensive English-taught degree programs or large international offices. A distinctive characteristic is its role as the only accredited Islamic university in the Netherlands offering full academic degrees in Islamic sciences, serving as a vital hub for Islamic scholarship and community leadership.
The Islamic University of Applied Sciences Rotterdam (IUASR) (formerly: Islamic University of Rotterdam-IUR) was founded on 21 November 1997 by the Turkish-Dutch scholar Dr. S.T.K. Damra. He served as the founding rector of the university and led the institution until his departure in 2001. The first chairman of the board was educator and author Hamdi Mert.
